Frequently Asked Service Questions

Common Service Questions

Keeping up with your vehicle's maintenance needs can be confusing. At Suburban Buick GMC of Troy, we provide expert auto service and helpful advice to encourage drivers to keep their vehicles in excellent shape. We address some of the most frequently asked service questions, providing drivers with needed information to save them time and money.

When Should I Change My Oil?

We recommend changing your motor oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first. While the golden rule was changing your oil every 3,000 miles, most modern vehicles have improved engine technology so that the oil can last longer. Consult your owner's manual and work with our service technicians to determine the best oil change interval for your vehicle.

When Should I Change My Tires?

We recommend changing your tires to match your driving conditions or when your tire is too old, worn, or damaged. Cars, trucks, and SUVs have the best traction when their tires reflect the seasons and terrain. Snow tires are perfect for shedding snow and gripping ice in the winter, while summer tires offer tight handling and improved efficiency on dry pavement.

Since tires naturally wear down over time, you will want to ensure there is enough tire tread left to drive safely. The tire tread runs around the outside of your tire and is crucial for traction and stopping. If your tires have less than 2/32s of an inch left, it's no longer safe or legal to drive. Cracks, punctures, and gashes can also put you at risk of a popped tire. Routine inspections will help you catch issues before they become more serious.

When Should I Rotate My Tires?

You should rotate your tires at manufacturer-recommended intervals or every 5,000 miles. It's convenient for many drivers to rotate their tires at the same time they change their oil since the timeframes are similar. Your owner's manual will recommend the interval and type of rotation your vehicle requires.

Tire rotations help redistribute the work between your four tires. The front tires are usually responsible for most of the acceleration, turning, and brake, which can cause them to wear quicker than the rear tires. By rotating the tires in specific patterns, you can maximize the longevity of your tires.

Do I Need Brake Service?

We recommend brake service if it has been more than a year since you've had your brakes looked at or if your brakes are acting or sounding strange. Since your brakes are essential for your vehicle's safety and performance, staying up to date with brake service is one of the most important aspects of car maintenance.

Some of the signs that you may need brake service include:

  • Screeching or scraping sounds when braking
  • Longer stopping distances
  • The brake pedal feels spongey or travels further

Having professionals check your brakes every six months will help you maintain them and avoid more expensive issues. It's possible you will need brake service more often if you tow frequently, brake sharply, or drive in heavy traffic.

Does My Windshield Need Repairs or a Replacement?

Our team can repair minor windshield damage, and our collision centers can provide expert windshield replacements if the damage is serious. Our technicians can repair small chips and cracks without affecting your visibility or the windshield's strength. However, if the crack is larger than 6 inches, extends into your line of sight, or has deep or contaminated glass chips, a replacement is necessary.
